Nuclear Research

Although the Los Alamos National Laboratory is a crucial nuclear research lab, critical security failures occurred in 2002, and have, unbelievably, continued throughout the first decade of the 21 century. The person who was mainly responsible for uncovering these failures in 2002, authored a book in 2010, titled, Implosion At Los Alamos: How Crime, Corruption and Cover-Ups Jeopardize America’s Nuclear Weapons Secrets. This startling book describes in detail, with well-documented facts, how and why theses alarming nuclear research security failures occurred. Unnerving is the proposition that these security failures may now have placed the United States - in 2010 - in jeopardy of terroristic attacks. Although the Los Alamos National Laboratory is Ground Zero for the protections of these United States of America and their allies, this United States nuclear research institute has and continues to fail miserly in protecting America’s nuclear secrets.

The book describes how these failures come in multiple forms, from egregious mismanagement that allows lab personnel to steal taxpayer money and goods, to inadequate investigations. Although lab leadership in 2003 vowed to correct these admitted security deficiencies, these failures have continually escalated throughout the first decade of the 21 century. For example: (a) In 2008, classified information was secretly removed from a classified nuclear research division when a contract employed concealed the data in a backpack; and (b), in 2009, a lab scientist took 3 lab computers out of the lab’s front gate to his residence in Santa Fe. The scientist’s home was subsequently burglarized, with the unknown thieves stealing the 3 lab computers; computers that potentially contained secret data.

This book is a must read for all Americans concerned about the security of our national secrets, terroristic attacks against the homeland, and protection of our nuclear research data.
