National Security Threats

National security threats have increasingly occurred at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and for that the lab has come under heavy scrutiny in the first decade of the 21 century. At the turn of the century there was illegal downloading of classified information, then the loss of a hard drive containing the world’s most secret nuclear weapons information.

But that was not all the chicanery that would surround national security threats at Los Alamos. In 2002, it was uncovered that certain employees at the Los Alamos lab were involved in crimes, mismanagement, corruption and cover-ups. It was determined in 2002, the threats included lab personnel not being able to locate nearly 400 lab computers. The person who was mainly responsible for uncovering these security threats in 2002, authored a book in 2010, titled, Implosion At Los Alamos: How Crime, Corruption and Cover-Ups Jeopardize America’s Nuclear Weapons Secrets.

As a result, Los Alamos leaders were subpoenaed before three congressional hearings were they were blasted for allowing these national security threats to occur, especially threats that concerned the protection of America’s national secrets. But the debacles did not stop there. Employees started losing classified disks, thumb drives and flashcards. In 2008 a contract employee of the lab walked out of the lab’s front gate with secret classified data secreted in a backpack. Threats escalated in 2009, when a lab scientist took three lab computers to his home. His residence was subsequently burglarized, the unknown thieves stealing the 3 computers. Lab leaders conducted an audit and determined that they actually had about 70 more computers lost or stolen.

This book is a must read for all Americans concerned about the security of our national secrets, terroristic attacks against the homeland, and protection against national security threats.
